 Lifeline Project
Sri Lanka fought a bitter internal war for 25 years. The civilian toll of dead and injured keeps rising to unprecedented levels. Deaths and injuries of unarmed civilians are not confined to Colombo but strike across the country. Bombs and bullets do not discriminate - these people are Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Burghers. They are Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and Muslims. And mostly, they are poor or middle income, unable to bear the cost of heavy medical bills.

The ever-rising civilian toll has many repercussions on the injured who suffer both physical and mental trauma and on relatives of the dead be it children losing a parent or a family losing its breadwinner.

The injured are left with a host of problems including physical disabilities, mental trauma and lack of money to make a recovery. They are in need of rehabilitation for injuries of body and soul.

CandleAid’s programme to assist survivors of violence is called the Lifeline Project. It is designed to help those devastated by random violence to regain and rebuild their lives.

The project will be implemented by a team of volunteers and CandleAid administration staff.

Donors can contribute any amount they wish. This will go into a central pool from which funds will be accessed for the most deserving cases. Regular reports of those who have benefited will be sent to donors.

Each individual is recommended for sponsorship by an CandleAid coordinator, who from then onwards acts as the link between the family and CandleAid.

Administration

A Chief Coordinator in Sri Lanka, along with CandleAid staff, will administer the project with a coordinator for each person in the program and communicate with the donors. All paperwork and documentation are meticulously handled by the above people and the CandleAid offices.
