In December 2023, heavy rains wreaked havoc across the Island, leading to severe flooding in
various regions. One such area profoundly affected was the small village of Solai in
Kilinochchi. The 24th of December marked a disastrous day when Solai villagers awakened to the
grim reality of their homes awash in floodwater. They found themselves in urgent need of
temporary shelters, and in this time of crisis, the collective strength of the neighborhood
became evident
When its dedicated volunteer coordinator, Rev. Father Nadeep requested assistance for these
people, CandleAid readily committed to making a positive impact.
Recognizing that food was the most critical necessity for families by now in temporary shelters,
CandleAid worked diligently to offer timely aid for the affected Solai Community. Funds from its
Special Food project donated by CandleAid’s generous donors were sent to Kilinochchi enabling
Father Nadeep to purchase and distribute dry rations to the value of LKR 10,000 each to 25
affected families.
The photographs vividly capture the extent of the damage inflicted by the flooding. Additionally, the
images depict the distribution process, when these families came to the Don Bosco Technical Institute to
collect their food supplement.
CandleAid’s efforts stand as a testament to its dedication to making a meaningful difference in the
lives of those affected by crippling disasters. Through swift action and unwavering community support,
CandleAid strives to bring relief and hope to the impacted communities and families as they rebuild
their lives in the aftermath of these catastrophes of nature.
